Dosas are a south Indian delicacy and a staple food in south India. They are ridiculously delicious and can be enjoyed any time of the day, be it breakfast, lunch, dinner or mid-day snack. Restaurants worldwide have these beautiful Indian creeps on their menu and it’s savoured by everyone. They are made in various ways and come with infinite filling possibilities and are considered healthy and appetising.

We know how healthy dosa is very low on fats and easy on the stomach. Now imagine adding lentils to your dosa, since eating lentils every day can be so bland and boring how about we mix and mash it into our dosas. This way you will eat your lentils for the day without even realizing so. One such lentil that we will be using for the dosa is the chickpea.

Chickpea is extremely high in protein, dietary fibre, folate and certain dietary minerals such as iron and phosphorus. So it would be really ignorant of us to not add this miracle seed to our diets. Most of all such nutrients food elements are extremely essential to be added to the kid’s diet but they are the fussy eaters and feeding lentils and pulses can be a task that’s when this dosa comes to help. Kids never refuse at dosas, just add the chickpeas to the dosa, they would never come to know about it. This hot crispy and healthy dosa served hot when paired with chutney or sambar is an absolute treat.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup white chickpea kabuli chana
  • ½ cup split green gram moong dal
  • 2 tbsp split black gram urad dal
  • ¼ tsp fenugreek seed methi seed
  • 1 inch ginger
  • 4 green chilli
  • ¼ tsp carom seed ajwain
  • few coriander leaves
  • salt to taste
  • oil for cooking
  • water

Instructions

  • Take a large bowl, add white chickpea, moong dal, urad dal, methi seed. Wash and soak all dals and lentils together for 4 to 5 hour or overnight.
  • Transfer all soaked ingredients to mixi jar and add ginger, green chilli, coriander leaves, carom seed, salt. Add little water and grind a thick smooth paste.
  • Transfer grounded paste to a large bowl, add little water and adjust the consistency. The batter should be medium consistency, do not make it runny as you can not make them crisp. Too thick batter with result in very thick chana dosa and will be unable to spread the batter when you make them.
  • Take an iron pan and heat it till smoky hot.
  • Spread little oil and set the flame to medium, pour the batter evenly with the base of the ladle.
  • Cover it with a lid and cook until crisp.
  • Flip the dosa to the other side and toast it.
  • Flip it back and remove it from tawa.
  • Serve chana dosa hot with chutney or sambar.

Notes

  • I have made these with white kabuli chana, but black chana or even chana dal works well.
  • No fermentation required for this dosa.
  • This dosa works fine without rice. it’s completely your choice to use rice or not.
  • Never try to spread dosa on very hot tawa. If the skillet is too hot, just sprinkle some water on it and wipe it with a kitchen cloth before spreading another one.
  • Never spread the batter on a cold tawa, it will stick to it. Spread the dosa on medium heat.
