Golden milk or turmeric milk is an ayurvedic beverage that is very popular in India, to cure fever, flu, cough problems. It has many health benefits and thus great to include in your everyday diet. This drink has some magical power to it which cures all your miseries, be it physical or emotional. Haldi milk helps to build up the immune system apart from having anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. So it is a very good choice to include in your kid’s and family diet.

Indian recipes are not known for its taste and flavour, but also the medical properties it holds. Particularly there are certain dish and beverages which is served to improve the immune and digestive related problems. One such simple and easy beverage recipe is the turmeric milk recipe. Traditionally turmeric milk was prepared with turmeric root and crushed long pepper known as ‘pipli’ or pippali in the Indian language. Piperine a compound found in long pepper was believed to enhance the bioavailability of curcumin in turmeric. Over the years-long pepper has been replaced by black pepper which also has piperine and is believed to be effective.

Just wrap a warm cup of turmeric milk in your palms and inhale the steam wafting from it and then sip it slowly while you read your favourite book and I can assure you all your woes will be gone.

Ingredients

  • 500 ml milk
  • 1 tbsp fresh turmeric root grated
  • 1 tsp black pepper crushed
  • 2 pods cardamom crushed
  • 1 inch cinnamon
  • ½ tsp ghee
  • 1 tsp honey

Instructions

  • Firstly, take fresh turmeric root and peel its skin.
  • Grate the turmeric root fine using a grater. Loosely measure about 1 tbsp of grated roots.
  • Take mortar and pestle, add 1 tsp of black peppercorns and 2 cardamom pods. crush into rough powder and keep it aside.
  • Take a saucepan, add 500ml of milk. If you are vegan then you can go for coconut milk or almond milk.
  • Add 1 tbsp of grated turmeric, crushed black pepper-cardamom mixture, 1-inch cinnamon and ½ tsp of ghee.
  • Mix well and let the milk to boil.
  • Now cool the milk slightly if you are adding honey.
  • strain the milk and add 1 tsp honey and mix well. You can alternatively use sugar as a sweetener or totally avoid it.
  • Do not let the turmeric milk to cool down completely but also no need to burn the tongue. So drink the milk warm or at whatever temperature it suites you.

Notes

  • I have used fresh turmeric root here. You can use turmeric powder too.
  • Add honey if you look the sweet version but add it to warm milk and not to hot milk.
  • If you are vegan then you can go for coconut milk or almond milk.
  • Do not skip pepper and ghee because pepper helps the active ingredient in turmeric known as ‘curcumin’ to absorbs faster into the body. Ghee or coconut oil acts as a lubricant to the joints, if you have a sore throat ghee will melt and coat your throat and relief from cough too.

  • Turmeric milk is ready! Do not let the turmeric milk to cool down completely but also no need to burn the tongue. So drink the milk warm or at whatever temperature it suites you.
